I've been making Fairies since 2013, and have perfected the pattern and process over the years, and now I'd like to share the enjoyment I get from stitching these beautiful decorations and bringing their characters to life.

Your kit will be put together by me in my Sussex studio, with your choice of skin tone, hair colour and hair style. I'll pick the components from the very same Fairy making stash I use to sew them for my customers, and send you everything you need to make your own Fernery Fairy.

These kits have been designed to be simple and fun to make, for any ability. A basic knowledge of hand sewing is helpful (you'll need to do some small, neat running stitches and back stitch) but there are no tricky embroidery stitches to learn - just simple applique.

Included in the kit will be:

  • A full instruction booklet giving you step by step details of how to make your Fairy
  • Two pieces of good quality wool felt to construct the Fairy on, one interfaced to stiffen your finished decoration.
  • Sparkly silver wings and fairy shoes
  • Your Fairy components, pre-cut from good quality fabrics, and backed with a heat fix material so you can iron them carefully in position before you stitch.
  • A template to help you get the eyes positioned just right
  • A length of each colour Gutermann sew-all thread you'll need, on a reusable thread spool
  • A length of waxed hanging cord
  • A cuppa and a biscuit, to give you sustenance to sew!

If you are visually impaired and would like a digital copy of the instructions emailed over please just ask.

You will need a few simple things:

  • A fine needle, ideally a size 11 sharps - you can request to have one included in your kit if you don't have one at home.
  • Pins or binding clips
  • An iron (with the steam off)
  • A dab of your own blusher and a cotton bud (or a watercolour pencil)
  • Tweezers can be handy, but are by no means essential
  • Scissors to cut around your finished Fairy
  • A dab of fabric glue or PVA is helpful, if you have it

Piecing your fairy together ready for sewing can be fiddly, but its also part of the fun of making the kit! I would always encourage you to go for the full experience, however if you want to get straight onto the sewing and know that your Fairy components are all in the right places I am happy to piece it all together for you before I pop your kit in the post. Just let me know if you'd prefer this option, there's a box you can tick above.

I would LOVE to see your Fairy work in progress photos on social media - please tag me @thefernery on your grid posts and stories, tik toks and facebook posts. If you have a private account you are so welcome to email photos and feedback to me instead. If you take a beautiful photo that I use either on my website or on Instagram (with your permission of course) I will send you a little treat in the post as a thank you. And it goes without saying that I would love you to pop back here and leave a review after your purchase, if you have a moment, to let others know how you found the kit.

I don't hand sew myself - my work is made using freemotion embroidery, on a domestic sewing machine - so I needed to know that the kits and instructions were just right before they launched. These beautiful kits have been put together with the help of Emma James, who you may already know from Leshy Lamb - you can also see more of Emma's stitching over on her home account A Whimsical Whim. Having run her business on instagram for many years, Emma understood what I needed when I put a shout out on instagram for help back in August, and I'm not being dramatic when I say these kits would not have happened without her!

These kits are for personal use only, and items you make from this kit are not under any circumstances to be offered for sale. The Fernery Fairy design is not to be copied or imitated, in stitched form or otherwise. The instruction booklet included in the kit is the intellectual property of The Fernery, and is not to be reproduced or shared in any way.

I will always aim to post kits within 10 days - your order confirmation email will say three weeks, as this is the timeframe for items I need to make, but I won't keep you waiting that long for a kit : )
